چکیده

Among the various books dealing with Salvarsan this will naturally take a prominent place as it has received the benediction of Professor Ehrlich and may thus be regarded as being almost an official document. A large part of the book is devoted to a description of individual cases showing the great value of Salvarsan, especially in refractory cases of syphilis. The occurrence of relapses in a fair proportion of cases is freely admitted, the explanation being that there are certain foci which are imperfectly reached by the drug owing to a defective vascular supply. After Venus, mercury: syphilis treatment in the UK before Salvarsan.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the treatment of syphilis varied substantially in the UK. Two of the commonly used treatments—mercury and bismuth— were often used for long durations, which prompted the public health warning, ‘two minutes with Venus, two years with mercury’. Beyond this variation in treatment, venereology itself was a topic taught to generalists rather than specialist...

Further Observations on Certain Features of Experimental Syphilis and Yaws in the Rabbit

1. Lesions of the testicle and scrotum of the rabbit produced by the treponema of syphilis and of yaws afford material for the study of chemotherapy, of serum reactions, and of immunity. 2. On experimental and clinical grounds, it appears that yaws can be cured with a smaller dose of salvarsan than is necessary to cure syphilis. 3. The magic bullet hits many targets: Salvarsan's impact on UK health systems, 1909-1943.

Administratively distinct from the general health system, the new system of VD care created by the Royal Commission provided diagnosis and treatment to all regardless of means. The government supplied three-quarters of the centres’ costs and provided Salvarsan free to general practitioners. Beyond shapin...

A cure at last? Penicillin's unintended consequences on syphilis control, 1944-1964.

In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered the mould Penicillum notatum, setting the stage for the development of an entirely new syphilis cure. Initial problems with cultivation and isolation waylaid the research until it was taken on by the Oxford team of Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain. The first patient was treated in 1943 and within 12 months over 10 000 early syphilis patients had been tre...

A Review of the Serological Results of the Treatment of Syphilis in the Nottingham Clinic.

FOR many years after the introduction of salvarsan and its substitutes into the treatment of syphilis opinion as to the efficacy of these drugs was expressed chiefly in the form of impressions gained by individual observers without adequate statistical backing. Abroad, and especially in the United States, a vast literature of wellstudied series has lately sprung up, based mainly on the alternat...
